One community, one Concord identity

At Monday’s School Board meeting, I wore an orange Concord Crush hat, a blue Rundlett sweatshirt and crimson Concord High pants. All three represented kids from the same city, but my outfit hardly showed it.

That was my point.

As a parent, youth coach and local business owner, I’m asking that our middle school’s colors match Concord High School’s, regardless of the new school’s name.

For younger kids, wearing the same colors as high school athletes they admire builds pride, belonging and excitement about where they’re headed. Our local Rising Tide youth basketball program already embraces that connection through Concord High’s colors.

Building a new middle school gives us an opportunity to choose matching colors before they become part of the gym, signs and permanent features. Those things already need colors. Choosing them now could avoid the expense of changing them later.

The booster club pays for middle school athletic uniforms. Existing uniforms can stay in use, with matching colors phased in as replacements are needed. This could also allow high school uniforms to be passed down and families to wear their Concord gear longer.

Before Monday’s meeting, my petition supporting this change had gathered 283 signatures.

I respect Rundlett’s history. Whatever name goes on the building, let’s give our children one consistent Concord identity they can carry with pride.
