A 78-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in Hopkinton after driving the wrong way on Interstate 89, leaving the northbound lanes closed until officers could stop the vehicle.
At 11:48 a.m., state police were notified that a silver Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-89, just south of Exit 7 in Hopkinton.
John Caramore of Charlestown was identified as the driver of the vehicle.
The truck was in the high-speed lane when the first trooper tried to stop it with his lights and siren activated, authorities said. Caramore avoided the cruiser and continued driving the wrong way. A second trooper’s attempt to stop the truck also failed.
Then, a third trooper set up a rolling roadblock to stop northbound traffic just north of Exit 3. Once the lanes were clear, the first two troopers drove toward the truck, surrounded it with their cruisers and brought it to a stop.
Caramore was charged with felony reckless conduct, reckless driving and operating against the designated direction of travel on a highway. He was taken for a medical evaluation and later released on bail conditions that prohibit him from driving.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Concord District Court in January.
During the incident, the northbound lanes of I-89 were shut down for 20 minutes
