Center line rumble strips

The number of fatal vehicle accidents in New Hampshire has gone up 18% since 2021. Our per capita fatal accident rate is almost equal to California, double the rate of Massachusetts and is higher than states such Pennsylvania, Illinois and Minnesota.

The causes of these accidents range from driver impairment to driver distraction. Here in the Lakes Region, there have been significant spikes of fatal wrecks. Various talking heads have opined on causes and potential remedies. Having liquor stores on the highways probably doesn’t help!

The one proven action that will reduce these fatal accidents is center line rumble strips. There are some located around the state, but most roads do not have them. NH DOT requires these strips to be placed on new roads that are posted at 40 miles per hour or higher; roadway width of 28 feet, and the road must be in good condition. Routes 11, 16, 28, 106 and 107 are roadways that need to have more center line rumble strips installed.

I have heard that there was pushback from motorcyclists. Well, there are far more cars and trucks that travel these roads than motorcycles. Let your state reps and senators know about the need to improve roadway safety and show support for center line rumble strips.
