Concord’s Granite VNA Hospice House
In 1968, the very first hospice house was built in England under the leadership of Dr. Dame Saunders.
In 1978, the first hospice house in the U.S. was built in Connecticut, its leader being the dean of the Yale Nursing School. In 1994, the second Hospice House in New England and perhaps in all of the U.S. was built right here in Concord. Its leader was Geraldine Donahue, RN. The common denominator was a strong nursing leadership and a caring supportive community.
The end of life is a difficult time when families commonly need help. It can’t always be at a hospital.
Home hospice care is provided by the VNA, but sometimes that is not enough. In its 32 years the Concord VNA Hospice House has cared for over 4,500 people. It is not a money-making proposition, maybe explaining why even today there are only two other hospice houses in the state.
After 32 years, the Hospice House needs interior renovations and also a boost to its endowment to support upkeep and staffing. To allow it to continue taking care of people, the goal is to raise $2 million. We have raised $1.7 million and hope to reach our goal by December.
Please consider a donation. Our Hospice House is proof that we still are a caring supportive community. Contact information: https://www.granitevna.org/campaign
