Somehow we blinked and found ourselves in 2026! Holiday festivities have come to a close, and it’s now the start of a new year, which means so much excitement to come in the months ahead.
I love the feeling of a whole year like a blank canvas — yours to paint whatever colors you choose. It’s freeing, exhilarating and yes, a little terrifying. But isn’t that the beauty of it, too?
If you’re like me, you take the start of the year slowly. Sleep in, try a new recipe, go for a snowy walk. Try ice skating at the Everett Arena in Concord (open skating is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. everyday except Sunday, when it’s at 5:30 to 7:30 p.m) or go to one of the local pond rinks if you want to skate outdoors.
On Friday evening, venture to Franklin for a traditional Irish music session at the Waterhorse Irish Pub. This communal music jam — both instrumental and vocal — happens from 7-9 p.m. on Friday evenings, and there is no cost to attend.
Black Forest Nursery in Boscawen is hosting a free Houseplants 101 class to help you learn how to better care for your indoor greenery, including soil moisture and light needs. Go to the nursery at 10 a.m. on Saturday for your fill of all things plants. No pre-registration is required for this event, so just show up with all your green-thumb enthusiasm and get ready to learn! Visit blackforestnursery.com for more information.
If you’re a young person looking to start your week off on the right note, check out Teens & Tweens Karaoke Night at the Concord Public Library on Monday, January 12 at 6 p.m. There will be drinks, snacks and singalongs. What could be better?
The library is on a new-year roll: It’s also hosting Ugly Art Night the next evening, Tuesday, January 13, at 6 p.m. This is a chance to embrace your inner creativity without worrying about the result. Just go and have a good time! All supplies are provided, so all you need to do is register: concordnh.gov/1983/Library.
Have a wonderful weekend!
