NEW YORK – Yankees reliever Nick Rumbelow has a torn elbow ligament and needs Tommy John surgery that will sideline him until next year.
New York said the 24-year-old right-hander was injured Sunday while pitching for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Rochester. Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad is scheduled to operate Friday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
In his season debut, Rumbelow relieved Anthony Swarzak to start the fourth, allowed two singles before getting three straight outs to strand the runners. He was hurt while warming up before the fifth.
Rumbelow made his big league debut June 23 and was 1-1 with a 4.02 ERA in 15 2/3 innings over 17 relief appearances. He had a 5.19 ERA over 8 2/3 innings during eight spring training appearances this year.
New York’s bullpen already was missing Bryan Mitchell, who broke a bone in his left big toe while covering first base during a March 30 exhibition game and is expected to be sidelined at least four months.
OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators have fired coach Dave Cameron after the team missed the playoffs.
New general manager Pierre Dorion made the announcement Tuesday. The Senators were 38-35-9 this season.
Assistant coaches Andre Tourigny and Rick Wamsley were also fired. Assistant Jason Smith was relieved of his coaching duties and offered another position with the organization.
Cameron was the 11th coach in franchise history, posting a 70-50-17 record behind the Senators bench. He took over as head coach on Dec. 8, 2014, after the Senators fired Paul MacLean.
While Ottawa was the last Canadian team to be eliminated from the playoffs, they were not considered a serious threat to make the postseason.
Cameron spent three-plus years as an assistant coach before replacing MacLean.
JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Steve Stricker is the next American captain for the Presidents Cup, for the 2017 matches at Liberty National.
Stricker played on five Presidents Cup team and had a 14-10 record while playing on nothing but victorious teams. He will go up against Nick Price, who will be International captain for the third straight time.
The International team has not won since 1998, though it was one putt away from a victory last October in South Korea. Price successfully lobbied after the 2013 matches to extend the number of matches with hopes of making it a closer competition.
The 2017 matches will be during the last week in September on a course with views of the Manhattan skyline. Liberty National also has hosted The Barclays twice.
DUBLIN – A mixed martial arts body says a 28-year-old Portuguese fighter has died after receiving emergency treatment following a fight in Dublin.
Total Extreme Fighting said Tuesday that Joao Carvalho died after two days of treatment. He was hospitalized after being knocked out in the third round of a welterweight fight against Charlie Ward at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday.
Cesar Silva, CEO of TEF, said the organization extends its “most sincere condolences to the family of Joao Carvalho and his teammates in Team Nobrega. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
TEF said in the statement that Carvalho was assessed by doctors and medical staff at the onsite medical office “as per normal procedure” after the fight, and then sent to hospital.
