Note to readers

On Sept. 2, the Monitor published an editorial that argued for the importance of character witnesses when a judge is making a decision in a criminal sentencing. In attempting to illustrate the wide range of cases before a judge, we wrote that “an adult who enters into a sexual relationship with a minor” may be an example of “an otherwise good person who makes a bad mistake.”

To be clear, we in no way intended to normalize sexual relationships between an adult and a minor, and we regret that our imprecise wording left some readers with that impression.
