Stephen David Ryan, 51, died Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association Hospice House, after a seven-year battle with multiple myeloma, a disease that he challenged on his own terms with gusto. He was surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, mother and close friends.

Born Oct. 4, 1958, in Manchester, Steve graduated from Manchester Memorial High School in 1976. He earned his Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1980 and his master's degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University and later obtained his Professional Engineer license. He married Joan Partridge in 1981. They had three children and settled in Concord.

From 1986 until his retirement in 2008, Steve taught in the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department at NHTI. Throughout the years, hundreds of his students have continued their education and entered the field of engineering, with guidance from his creative teaching. In addition to his ability to solve, elegantly, the most complex problems, he was a fine cartoonist, amateur astronomer, painter, inventor, builder, humorist, singer and conversationalist. He could be found reading, biking, spending time outdoors and sharing his dry sense of humor with his many friends. Steve was a devoted father, a loyal friend and a loving husband.

He was predeceased by his father, James "Buddy" Ryan; and by his son, David James Ryan.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Ryan; his daughters, Emily and Abby Ryan; his mother, Sally Ryan; his sister, Judy Ryan; his best friend, Mike Paquin; and many family members, friends and colleagues, who loved his presence in the world.

A celebration of his life will be held tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at NHTI in the Student Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, Ark. 72202; or The Smile Train, P.O. Box 9623, Washington, D.C., 20090.
