MOSCOW - Patrick Chan of Canada set a world record yesterday to take the lead in the men's short program at the world championships.

Chan scored 93.02 points for his jazzy routine, beating Evgeni Plushenko's old mark of 91.30 set at the 2010 European championships in Tallinn, Estonia.

Chan has a huge 11-point lead on Nobunari Oda of Japan, who stepped out of his opening quad toe. Defending champion Daisuke Takahashi of Japan was another 1.6 points back in third place after a clean but less-adventurous program.
