Belmont police said they arrested two Laconia men found with drugs Friday on the Winnisquam Trail.

Police said they recently increased foot, bike and cruiser patrols in the area of the Winnisquam Trail, also known as the WOW Trail, after residents expressed concern about more activity in the area – to include new tent sites between the trail and the shoreline of Winnisquam Lake.

While patrolling Friday, police spotted David A. Sargent, 46, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for fentanyl possession. Upon seeing a Belmont officer, Sargent took off running. However, he did not make it far before officers tackled him and took him into custody.

Police said Sargent was in possession of narcotic drugs, several small baggies, 15 needles, a baggie containing a crystal-like substance, and three spoons which had a burnt residue on them.

Police also arrested Jason Sabin, 35, who was with Sargent on the trail. Sabin faces a charge of resisting arrest. He was also found in possession of four needles, a liquid substance and a baggie containing a crystal-like substance, which are awaiting further lab testing.

Both Sabin and Sargent are scheduled to appear in Belknap County Superior Court on Thursday afternoon.
