Letter: Insatiable billionaires

Published: 01-27-2025 9:19 AM

Did the rise of capitalism ever envision the billionaire class? Is capitalism healthy when the gap between the billionaires and the rest of us continues to grow exponentially? Is it healthy when more of us move from middle class to economically disadvantaged?

How much money is enough money for each billionaire? Is there any amount of money that billionaires can “earn” before it becomes obscene? Is a billionaire’s failure to pay his or her fair share of taxes an unintended consequence of the computer age? Should billionaires be given the choice of spending half their excess billions for social good, charities and new business ventures? Alternatively, should billionaires be taxed at least 50% for their excessive wealth?
