Buzz Gagne of Concord won a gold medal at the USA Track and Field Masters Championship at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday.

Gagne, 69, took gold in the javelin throw among competitors age 65-69 with a best throw of 156 feet, 9 inches. Three of his six throws were the best among seven others competing in the national event.

“I was really in the zone down there,” said Gagne, an assistant track coach at Merrimack Valley High School. “That’s a nice feeling.”

Gagne led the field from his first throw to his last but his pursuit of a gold medal wasn’t easy. His javelin didn’t arrive in Baton Rouge in time for the competition due to a shipping mishap. To make matters worse, Gagne said the spikes on his old throwing shoes were too long and did not satisfy regulation. Fortunately for Gagne, another competitor offered his javelin for Gagne to borrow. Another lent their shoes.

“I just sent them back to him (Thursday) morning,” Gagne said. “That shows the kind of nice people that javelin throwers are.”
