Zachary Berliner: Hopkinton High Male Athlete of the Season

Friday, April 20, 2018

What was the biggest challenge you or your team faced this season and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge was mainly that the team was really young and inexperienced in high school racing. We had two 8th graders which I think was the most out of all the teams in the division, maybe even in the state.

Who was the unsung hero of your team?

Speaking in part for the boys team, it definitely was our second skier, Kyle Pellerin. I had never heard of him before and he improved the team a lot. He made it so all the pressure of how we did in a race wasn’t on me and I was glad we had another skier who could consistently get top 15 every race.

If you could improve high school skiing in New Hampshire, what would you do?

Make it so it was an environment that could be fun and competitive for both top tier racers and people who had never done the sport before. A lot of people don’t jump into the sport when they’re older and I feel that really limits the amount of people that participate in high school racing.

Do you have any sports superstitions? If so, what are they?

That some sports get favored over others. In a lot of communities some high school sports get pushed off to the side and are not looked after as much. This can be said for alpine in my school. Basketball is a lot more popular in my school meaning sports like nordic and alpine don’t get a lot of attention. This year the boys basketball got new uniforms while both the nordic and alpine teams still have bibs that we use for races that are at least 10 years old.

What are some of the unwritten rules of your sport?

Always have a smile on your face and don’t give up. Ski racing is a sport where a little mistake during your run can influence your time to be seconds off the top time. I’ve learned to not focus too hard on my time and just have fun during the race.

Who on your team, coaches included, reminds you of a character in a TV show or movie?

My coach who is also my dad, he is like superman in that he always come in a saves the day with him waxing or tuning my skis and other peoples skis on the team who needed them done.

If life were a video game, what would some of the cheat codes be?

The ability to travel in time and be able to fly.

What is something that is really popular now, but in five years everyone will look back on and be embarrassed by?

Definitely the music, clothes and trends that have been made popular by my generation. I think a lot of us will look back on them in like 10-20 years and wonder how these were ever popular.

Where do you get your news?

YouTube and on TV. I like a lot news stories that seem so outrageous that they can’t be true but they are, I always these really interesting for some reason.

What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?

Best purchase would have to be a 5 pound bag of skittles, my worst purchase would have to be that same bag since I ate it all three days later and got sick.

What’s the most ridiculous fact you know?

That seals only sleep for a little over a minute at a time.

If you could go to school in a foreign country, which country would you pick and why?

Germany, I know a bit of German from school and I also really like their culture and I think it would be really cool to visit some places.

If animals could talk, which would be the rudest?

Seagulls because they take people’s food at the beach are just naturally annoying.

What questions would you like to ask a time traveler from 200 years in the future?

Have you met other life forms from other planets yet?

If you were hired to show tourists what life is really like where you live, what would you show them / have

them do?

I’d have them kayak on the Contoocook River and if it was in season go to the fair.

What is the craziest thing one of your teachers has done?

I had two teachers volunteer themselves to be duct taped to a wall to raise money.

What’s the best thing about being a teen? What’s the worst?

Not having to do adult stuff like taxes. The worst part would be all the people asking what you’re going to study in college and where you want to go.
