A Concord man died Saturday morning when a construction vehicle he was operating went down an embankment and rolled on top of him, police said.

John Davis, who was in his 50s, died at the scene of the incident at 8 Deer Meadow Road in Webster, said the town’s police Chief Benedict Liberatore. Police had initially withheld Davis’s name until his family had been notified.

Merrill Construction was paving a driveway at the residence at the time of the fatal accident, Liberatore said. Davis was operating a steamroller, a heavy construction vehicle used to level and smooth out road surfaces such as tar and asphalt.

It’s unclear if anyone currently lives at the single-family home, which several website listings indicate is for sale. Liberatore said only construction workers were at the residence mid-day Saturday.

A state medical examiner and first responders from throughout the region responded to the scene at Deer Meadow Road shortly before noon Saturday.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was also notified of Davis’s death, and will be sending an investigator to the scene Monday, Liberatore said.

An OHSA spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday night.
