David Browall, 25, of Concord, has been identified as the man who died inside a burning RV parked at the former Steeplegate Mall early Saturday morning.

The state medical examiner determined that Browall died of smoke inhalation, though the fire itself is still under investigation by state and local officials.

Concord Fire responded to the parking lot on the east side of the property around 3:30 a.m. and found the RV engulfed in flames. The blaze was knocked down within half  an hour, and Browall was found deceased inside, according to an announcement from the State Fire Marshal’s office.

The RV was hitched to a GMC Yukon on elevated blocks, as if the vehicle was being worked on, indicating it had not moved in some time. Two other trailers were parked in the area, near the TD Bank.

Last summer, a man died at a campsite on the same property.

Demolition of the mall, sought by the property owner since last summer, has been held up by lawsuits from tenants and neighbors. The project proposed for the site, a mixed-use development to bring hundreds of apartment units alongside retail and grocery stores, has yet to emerge from the city permitting process, but the developer requested permission to tear down most of the mall in advance, citing public safety concerns including trespassing, vandalism, trash dumping and intrusions by trend-seeking “urban explorers.”
