A Weare man was arrested Monday evening following a traffic stop in Dunbarton that escalated into a brief struggle and the use of a TASER, police said.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Concord Stage Road, also known as Route 77, when an officer observed a vehicle having difficulty maintaining its lane, according to the Dunbarton Police Department.

Police said the driver, Darel Demers, 36, of Weare, showed clear signs of alcohol impairment, and he refused to exit the vehicle or comply with a field sobriety test.

When officers attempted to take him into custody for suspected driving while intoxicated, a struggle ensued with an officer deploying a TASER. The officer was able to remove Demers from the vehicle and take him into custody.

Police noted “the dangerousness of the situation was elevated due to passing high-speed traffic as well as a large knife that was between the front seat and center console.”

Dunbarton firefighters evaluated Demers before he was transported to the Weare Police Department.

He faces multiple charges, including second-offense DUI, resisting arrest, following too close and a yellow-line violation.

Demers’ vehicle was towed from the scene, and he was later released on bail to a sober adult. He is scheduled to appear in Concord district court later this month.
