Letter: Veterans for Trump?

Veterans for Trump?

I recently witnessed a Veterans For Trump rally in Connecticut. Can someone explain to me how any military veteran can support someone who repeatedly disparages those who have honorably served their country? Trump denigrated the late Sen. John McCain’s military service which included five years as a POW. He has belittled Gold Star parents. On a trip to France, he was unwilling to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery outside of Paris where 1,800 U.S. Marines are buried.

My grandfather fought alongside these men at Belleau Wood during World War I. Trump has referred to my grandfather, my father, myself and all those who have defended their country in uniform as “losers” and “suckers.” He has expressed disdain for injured and maimed veterans. He recently insulted veterans by calling the civilian Medal of Freedom award he gave to one of his mega donors “better than” the Congressional Medal of Honor given to those who have displayed uncommon valor in battle. And all this from a man who claimed to be incapacitated by bone spurs so he wouldn’t have to serve during the Vietnam Conflict. Please, someone, explain this cognitive dissonance.
