Letter: Heat pump myths

David Brooks’s article “In N.H. homes, fossil fuels still dominate” (Sunday Monitor Local & State, May 19) perpetuates a common misunderstanding about whether electric heat pumps can do the job heating homes in our cold winters, saying there is “debate.”

For some reason it’s as hard to change folks’ beliefs about the performance of air-to-air heat pumps (which both heat and cool) as it is to change beliefs about whether the climate crisis is real. (It is!) Some beliefs simply seem to die hard.

In 2012 we installed “mini-splits” as the main heat source in our home. We have found them to work fine when outside temperatures are well below zero. Caution: One must buy Asian-engineered units to perform well at these temperatures.
