High schools: Bass fishing qualifying, Coe-Brown hands Bow girls’ soccer first loss and more results from this weekend

Bass Fishing

State qualifying tournament

Coe-Brown 10th, Kearsarge 13th, Bow 15th, Hillsboro-Deering 16th, John Stark 20th, Merrimack Valley 27th, Bishop Brady 28th

Highlights: Coe-Brown’s Sam Gauvin and Liz Abernathy caught eight fish with a combined weight of 14.9 pounds to finish 10th out of 32 teams at the bass fishing state qualifying tournament at Lake Winnipesaukee. The top 11 teams made the cut for the state championship on Saturday at Lake Winnipesaukee. Coe-Brown was the only team to make the cut, while Kearsarge (13.41), Bow (11.42), H-D (9.37), John Stark (7.57), MV (1.68) and Bishop Brady (1.37) also competed. Bedford (21.25), Lebanon (20.89) and Souhegan (20.12) were the top three teams.

Football

Merrimack Valley 28, Kennett 7

Key players: MV – Reece Clermont (4 rush TD), Jed Duquette, Travis Garcia

Highlights: The Pride’s offensive line had an outstanding day, allowing Clermont to rush for four touchdowns in MV’s homecoming vi ctory on Saturday.

Key players: Bow – Brady Lover (2 rushing TD), Caleb Schumacher (TD run), Kody McCranie (2-for-2 kicking PAT)

Highlights: The Falcons turned in their best defensive performance of the season, shutting out the Saints under the lights. Schumacher’s 48-yard TD run and Lover’s 1-yard keeper, both in the second quarter, put Bow up 14-0 at halftime. Lover scored from 68 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Coach’s quote: “A victory for our Friday Night Football has Bow football closing out September, 3-1.  I am proud of the tenacity, perseverance and effort on display tonight.  But, I also know as we navigate into the heart of the autumn, we must continually improve every aspect of our game. Highlights: The Sachems scored on their first three possessions of the game, while the Cougars fumbled the ball away on their two opening drives, allowing Laconia to take a 21-0 lead through the first quarter. Naughton found St. Clair in the end zone on a 27-yard pass with 1:03 left in the half. The Sachems led 28-7 at halftime and tacked on one more touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Franklin 10, Winnisquam 7

Key players: Franklin – Cole Johnson (28 yard FG, PAT kick; interception), Harrison Kaplan (12 yard TD run), Tyler Bennett (sack), Noah Tobin (5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss), Chase Currier (interception)

Highlights: Kaplan scored Franklin’s only touchdown of the day and Johnson connected on the game-winning field goal with 21 seconds left in the defensive battle. Bennett had a huge sack in the fourth quarter.

Mascoma 48, Hillsboro-Deering 14

Highlights: The Hillcats dropped their first game of the season on the road against the Royals.

Records: Mascoma 2-1; H-D 2-1

Malden Catholic (Mass.) 35, Concord 7

Key players: Concord – Colby Nyhan (TD pass), Travis Dunbar (TD catch)

Highlights: The Tide fell on the road in an exhibition game at Malden, Mass. Nyhan’s 6-yard pass to Dunbar tied the game, 7-7, with 8:33 left in the half, but Malden led 28-7 at halftime. This game does not in the NHIAA standings, the Tide resume regular league play on Friday night at Memorial Field when Concord hosts Windham.

Girls’ Soccer

Highlights: Maggie Escabi opened the game with a goal from distance in the second minute. Lapierre added the first of her two goals in the final minute of the first half and found the net again in the 53rd. Bow came out after halftime more aggressive and placed constant pressure on the CBNA defense, but the tandem of Buchanan and Thomas made several huge plays to keep the Falcons at one goal, handing Bow its first loss of the season.

Coach’s quote: “The defense did a great job today against a talented Bow attack. Bow really pressured us in the second half. This was a grind it out game with two good teams. It was important for us to not crack and we took a big step forward as a team tonight.” – Coe-Brown’s Josh Hils

Highlights: Morrall lifted Hopkinton to a homecoming victory with a goal with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. The Hawks are one of five remaining undefeated teams in D-III.

Highlights: The Hillcats held the Giants to a scoreless draw to earn their first points of the season.

Coach’s quote: “I am proud of our team’s overall performance against an equally matched opponent. We played hard defensively by limiting Brady’s offensive chances and we had some strong offensive moments, but unfortunately we could not put a shot past the Brady goalkeeper.” – H-D’s Jenna Rheault

Boys’ Soccer

Bow 2, Coe-Brown 1

Key players: Bow – Ethan Anderson (goal), Keenan Hubbard (goal), Cam Fuchs (assist), Carter Hall (assist); Coe-Brown – Nick Caproni (goal), Casey Colby (assist)

Highlights: Caproni scored on a shot from 20 yards out to give Coe-Brown an early lead in the fourth minute, but Bow leveled the score when a Fuchs set piece found the head of Hubbard. After several chances by both teams, Anderson settled the match with the game-winning goal off an assist from Hall in the 70th minute.

“The boys are frustrated because we generated enough chances to get points from the game. A poor giveaway was the difference at the end. We’re cleaning those up, though, getting better defensive shape, and clicking more offensively. I’m optimistic.” – Coe-Brown’s Christian Gompert

Hopkinton 3, Stevens 1

Key players: Hopkinton – Nolan Linstad (goal, assist), Deegan Tomaz (goal), Kristof Cauley (goal), Hunter Eckner-Taylor (4 saves)

Highlights: Linstad scored in the first minute of the match off a corner kick and Tomaz scored two minutes later on a hard, low shot, lifting the Hawks to an early lead and a victory in Hopkinton’s homecoming game. The Hawks dominated time of possession and created numerous scoring chances, but couldn’t get their third goal until Cauley scored on a penalty kick in the 69th minute.

Field Hockey

John Stark 4, Kennett 1

Key players: John Stark – Caylin Worthen (2 goals)

Highlights: The Generals beat the Eagles in a rematch of last year’s Division II championship game.

Pembroke 1, ConVal 0

Highlights: The Spartans controlled play for most of the second half and finally broke through in the last five minutes when Barker knocked home a loose ball. LePage and Ava Strazzeri helped Pembroke keep possession, while Anne Phillips, Jenna Godin and Mady Cali helped create lots of scoring chances.

Coach’s quote: “We wore them down as the game went along and felt it was just a matter of time before we got that goal. Fortunately, the goal finally came. Great team effort again.” – Pembroke’s Steve Langevin

Highlights: The Spartans finished sixth at the Kennett Invitational on Saturday. Saturley was Pembroke’s top finisher in the field of 105 runners .

Girls’ Cross Country

Highlights: The Spartans only had four runners, one shy of the requirement for a team score, but Pembroke had some solid individual results at the Kennett Invitational.
