High schools: MV field hockey, golf get big wins; more Wednesday results

Field Hockey

Merrimack Valley 5, ConVal 1

Key players: MV – Alyssa Brodeur (3 goals), Kaiya Mercier (goal, assist), Izzy Tucker (goal)

Highlights: Brodeur opened up the scoring less than one minute into the game off a rebound from the ConVal goalie’s pads. Brodeur found the net again less than three minutes later off a cross pass from Mercier. Both Mercier and Brodeur scored in the third off rebounds, and Tucker slipped one past the goalie’s left side to finish the third quarter. The Cougars scored four minutes into the fourth quarter after a loose ball in front of the cage. MV controlled the game with 17 penalty corners and 31 shots on goal. ConVal had one penalty corner and three shots on goal.

Highlights: Freshmen Magoon and McCullen carried MV to a second-place finish at Stonebridge with a pair of 39s.

Highlights: Cocola’s cross was headed home by Nadzan in the 62nd minute and the Falcons added an insurance goal when Reardon headed home a corner kick sent in by Weiss.

Girls’ Soccer

Coe-Brown 0, Kingswood 0

Key players: Coe-Brown – Sadie Scruton (11 saves), Amanda Thomas (defense), Cam Buchanan (defense), Lizzy Joy (defense), Mallory Carri (defense), Jennifer Noni (midfield), Jayden Spearin (midfield), Maggie Escabi (midfield)

Highlights: Coe-Brown had a go-ahead goal called back in the 63rd minute on an apparent hand ball. From there, the two teams traded scoring chances. Coe-Brown hit the cross bar and had another opportunity called off late in the game. Scruton was excellent in goal, keeping a fast and aggressive Knights’ attack off the board.

Coach’s quote: “This was a challenging game on many levels, but a draw still gets you two points and keeps us near the top of the standings. We will learn from the adversity we faced and build each other up.” – Coe-Brown’s Josh Hils

Girls’ Volleyball

Highlights: The Pride lost in three competitive sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18, combining for seven service aces as a team, but also committing 10 service errors.

Coach’s quote: “We bounced back better tonight after lots of work on mental toughness this week. Still, we shot ourselves in the foot with mental mistakes, including untimely service errors. We need to clean up the mental mistakes and get optimal serves from our best servers if we want to build any momentum.” – MV’s Tom Clark

Highlights: MV finished third in a four-team meet hosted by John Stark. Stark only had four runners, one short of the requirement for a team score. Noorda finished 1:07 ahead of the rest of the field.
