A man accused of repeatedly raping a girl in three Merrimack County towns was recently indicted by a grand jury on 11 felony charges.

Darpan Kirat Rai, 37, faces nine counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count each of attempted aggravated felonious sexual assault and felonious sexual assault. Kirat Rai was initially arrested on 15 counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, with eight of them alleging a pattern of sexual abuse. The initial charges allege abuse from 2008 to 2017 but the indictments reduce the time span by five years with the most recent acts alleged in 2012.

Police say the majority of the crimes occurred in Concord. However, Kirat Rai is also accused of sexually assaulting the girl in Boscawen and Bow.

Kirat Rai was arrested at his home in Rochester in March. He remains incarcerated at the Merrimack County jail in Boscawen as the case moves forward.

According to court records, attorneys are considering a possible plea bargain to resolve the case. A plea and sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 21. But if no agreement is reached and the case proceeds to trial, jury selection could begin as early as Dec. 3.

Authorities opened an investigation into Kirat Rai in spring 2018 after an attorney contacted Concord police to report multiple allegations of rape.

The victim, now in her 20s, was interviewed at the Merrimack County Advocacy Center in Concord as part of the investigation. Additionally, police interviewed numerous witnesses and collected evidence that corroborates the woman’s story, Concord police Lt. Sean Ford said previously.

At a bail hearing held just after the arrest, city prosecutor Steven Endres said Kirat Rai groomed the girl from a young age, forcibly raped her and continued to communicate with her even though she told him to leave her alone. He told the court that the Kirat Rai also took photos of the girl and then blackmailed her with them.

On one occasion, he showed her “a very large knife” and told her “he’d kill people who made him mad,” Endres said.

Kirat Rai was previously convicted in Rochester’s district court of domestic violence simple assault, according to court records. He pleaded guilty in September 2018 to the misdemeanor charge for assaulting an intimate partner. A 30-day jail sentence was suspended for two years on conditions of good behavior and upon his completion of anger management counseling.
