The man who died in a police standoff at the Federal House Inn in Plymouth last week has been identified by the Attorney General’s office as Kevin Steinfeldt, the inn’s owner.

Steinfeldt, 58, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and his death has been ruled a suicide, according to an autopsy conducted by Associate Chief Medical Examiner Abigail Alexander.

Steinfeldt also suffered additional gunshot wounds presumably fired by police in addition to the self-inflicted shotgun wound.

Steinfeldt was armed with a rifle and had barricaded himself inside the inn, police said.

The names of six state police officers involved in the shooting have not yet been released.

Local police responded to the inn on Route 25 around 2:40 p.m. on Nov. 6 to a report of a disturbance. When they arrived, they reported hearing what sounded like gunshots coming from inside and State Police, including its Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT unit then responded in support. Police said they communicated with Steinfeldt for several hours before the SWAT Unit radioed at 12:49 a.m. early Thursday morning that they had fired upon him.

“Police responded to the area following a disturbance call at the Inn Wednesday afternoon where they arrived to find the man armed and barricaded inside,” the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement. “Engagement with the barricaded male was ongoing at the time of the incident.”

Police found Steinfeldt near a first-floor doorway suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
