Letter: We need statewide mask mandate

Last week, 12,000 race fans gathered in Loudon. Next week, a 1,000-seat tent revival is coming to New Ipswich (last stop, the COVID hotspot of Des Plaines, Illinois). Bike Week is coming. White House Task Force member Dr. Deborah Birx just named Boston as a coronovirus hotspot and still Gov. Chris Sununnu will not issue a mandatory mask mandate.

What is he waiting for? According to the Monitor’s reporting, the daily case numbers are trending upwards. The inevitable cases from the NASCAR race will be showing up soon. Those from Bike Week will show up in early September. Hopefully we won’t become the next Florida, Arizona, or Texas, where cases are out of control.

The governor is counting on businesses to enforce a mask policy and the “common sense” of people to wear masks. Every time I go to the store I see an absence of that “common sense.”

While most people are wearing masks, a disturbing number of people are not, or are wearing a mask without covering their nose, which is the same thing.

Masks work. Don’t believe it? Google “Kansas mask experiment” and look at the dramatic difference in COVID cases for counties that had a mask mandate compared with counties that didn’t.

Gov. Sununnu, it is long past time to do what needs to be done. Issue a statewide mask mandate so we can get our businesses open and send our students back to school.
