Paying tribute to lives lost on Sept. 11

The names of the first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11 were read aloud at the New Hampshire Fire Academy in Concord on Monday morning.

A total of 342 firefighters and paramedics were killed 22 years ago at Ground Zero in New York City, 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority officers. A total of 2,753 were killed in the attacks on New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania.

The ceremony held by members of the Division of Fire Standards and Training and Emergency Medical Services was intended to remember the sacrifice and bravery of the first responders to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Similar events were held around the state, including at the Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, where the names were played of all Sept. 11 victims who lost their lives on that day both in the air and on the ground.

Now a 16-year tradition at the cathedral, the Remember to Remember Sept. 11 event plays about three hours of recordings of the names of those who died when terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, along with first-responders who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks.

“It totally suits our mission, which is the legacy of Veterans and their families, and promoting them in a way that honors them and celebrates them and all who served,” said Cathedral of the Pines Executive Director Michelle Lowe. “We will always have some sort of remembrance for Sept. 11 here.”
