Letter: Nuclear disarmament is about our survival

Thanks to letter writer John Raby (Monitor letters, Oct. 28) for sounding the alarm on Donald Trump’s reckless actions in demolishing prior nuclear weapons “control and arms reduction” agreements.

Veterans for Peace, of which I am a member, have five founding principles. In perhaps our most important goal, we call for an end to the arms race, leading to the ultimate abolition of nuclear weapons.

We think that the citizens of New Hampshire and much of the world believe that such weapons of mass destruction must be eliminated before they eliminate us, as Raby suggests.

Veterans for Peace, whose aim is to abolish war as an instrument of national policy, states that nuclear disarmament is not just about peace and justice. It is about the survival of all life on our planet Earth.

We should be asking not only presidential candidates to respond to our concerns about such weapons of mass destruction but all federal and even state candidates for office, including our state’s mayors.

This is too important an issue to ignore as we are here today, as is our planet, by good fortune and luck.

So let’s stop gambling with our collective future and become proactive citizens in demanding action by not just our government but all nuclear-armed nations to finally reach a verifiable treaty/agreement to rid humanity of this Sword of Damocles that hangs over all our heads.
