One woman died in a fire at an apartment building on Manchester Street in Concord.

The Concord Fire Department responded to a multi-unit building at 151 Manchester Street just before 6:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived, flames had engulfed the building’s second floor, where callers reported that a woman was trapped, according to the state fire marshal.

Multiple surrounding departments assisted in subduing the flames over the next 90 minutes. The victim, who authorities have not named pending an autopsy, was found deceased on the second floor of the building.

Property records show the building, constructed in 1978, contains ten bedrooms. The building’s other residents and responding firefighters were not harmed, though multiple residents were displaced by the fire.

Next-door at Brookside House of Pizza, a witness came inside and said there was a fire, according to an employee who declined to share her last name.

“It happened real fast. Real fast,” she said. “You could see the flames. You could see the smoke. You could hear glass shattering.”

As Brookside employees prepared to open Wednesday morning, the odor of smoke lingered. Pieces of vinyl siding hung from the apartment building, and its destroyed center windows revealed a hollowed interior. A green garden hose dangled from a first-story window.

The state fire marshal is investigating the source of the blaze.
