U.S. Attorney General William Barr has recently said communities that protest cops could lose “the police protection they need.”
I understand his speaking out for the police and demanding the respect and support they deserve. But we citizens pay taxes for police protection and it is one of the fundamental services our governments provide. Is he suggesting that police don’t show up on the job if they are disrespected? This statement is disrespectful of law enforcement officials who show up every day and do a great job in the face of sometimes dangerous situations and people. It is also disrespectful of minority groups who have a legitimate grievance about policing policies in some communities.
Barr’s statement makes no sense to me. I pay for and want police in my community. And I believe so do most people.
