An old replica of Fenway Park’s famous Citgo sign at Jones Field in Alton has been replaced after Stafford Oil and Citgo donated the new sign to the Alton Parks and Recreation Department, the Town of Alton and the Alton Youth League said on Wednesday.
The sign has been a fixture at Jones Field for 30 years. It was first brought there by a group of volunteers who raised money to put it up, and since then kids have enjoyed hitting balls to the left field’s green wall with the specially made sign in the background.
When the town recently determined it was time to make some upgrades to fencing, signage and the field itself, Stafford stepped up to keep the legacy of the replica sign alive.
With the new sign put up, young ballplayers in Alton can continue to dream for years to come of hitting a home run over the Citgo sign in the big leagues.
The Alton Youth League is a self-funded, non-profit organization that manages and organizes youth baseball and softball in the town. The Alton Youth League is made up of volunteers and is served by members of the Alton community.
