Letter: Rotten in Washington

There is a well-known quotation from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet that goes: “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” The speaker is referring to the bad things going on in Denmark, leading to its decay. Political corruption is a major theme of Hamlet, and that quote is relevant today.

It becomes increasingly clear that our president is bent on surrounding himself with loyalists. Experience, intelligence, a desire to serve country over self do not matter. Donald Trump’s approach to governing requires having loyal subjects. He has been successful even to the extent that Congress is ceding its responsibilities to Trump’s philosophy. My way or out.

If he is re-elected, I believe our country will be on its way to one-person rule. Look around the world. There is no shortage of tyrants, and no easy way to get rid of them. Those in power will destroy everything to remain in power. Think Syria and Venezuela.

We can vote. However, the Russians are committed to undermining that privilege. They are counting on the continued support from the administration. How rotten is that?
