Weare Second officer named in shooting, standoff The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office has named Weare police Sgt. Austin Maguire as the officer who fired his duty weapon during a shooting earlier this month.
Both Maguire and officer William Paul Lewis IV responded in the early-morning hours of Aug. 1 to a report of domestic violence at the home at 236 Buckley Road. Inside the residence, the officers encountered Jeffrey Clough-Garvin, 43, who fired and wounded Lewis, the attorney general said.
Lewis suffered non-life-threatening injuries when he was shot in the arm. He has since undergone surgery and been released from the hospital.
Authorities said Clough-Garvin ultimately took his own life after barricading himself in his home during a multi-hour standoff with police. Officers said they attempted to negotiate with Clough-Garvin but were unsuccessful. They found Clough-Garvin dead when they entered his home at 8:30 a.m., approximately seven hours after the initial domestic violence call.
An autopsy revealed the cause of his death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The state’s Chief Medical Examiner Jennie Duval reported that Clough-Garvin also suffered additional gunshot wounds but she did not release any further information about the cause of those injuries.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation by the attorney general’s office. A report regarding whether the use of force against Clough-Garvin was legally justified will be released following the conclusion of the investigation.
