Letter: Millions at risk of losing affordable healthcare coverage

In New Hampshire, many families have benefited from lower healthcare premiums thanks to enhanced tax credits introduced under the Inflation Reduction Act. These savings have helped families afford essentials like food, rent, and gas while maintaining access to quality healthcare. This year, a record number of Americans enrolled in Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace plans, with coverage in New Hampshire soaring in recent years. However, without action to extend these credits, premiums will increase significantly, and thousands of Granite Staters could lose their coverage. For families across the state, the consequences would be severe. Higher costs would force many to make impossible choices: whether to pay for medical care or meet basic needs like housing and groceries.

The solution is clear: Congress must act to make these savings permanent and protect access to affordable coverage. Preserving these tax credits is essential to maintaining the progress that has been made and ensuring families do not face sudden, unsustainable cost increases. Affordable health care shouldn’t be temporary, and losing this support would reverse the strides made in making coverage accessible to more Americans. By working together, Congress can ensure that families in New Hampshire, and across the country, continue to receive the care they need without breaking the bank.
