Letter: Scholarships make big difference for home-schooling

Dear Gov. Sununu: Thank you from the bottom of my heart for committing some of the CARES Act money to private and home-school scholarships. I have been home-schooling my children for over 20 years and once we began receiving the scholarship, it revolutionized my children’s education. In the past, I have had to use whatever curriculum I could afford, and reuse it for each child even if their learning style or interests were different. After the scholarship, I was able to choose an updated science curriculum, supplement with more hands-on activities to enrich their education, and switch to different curricula to suit a child’s learning style.

With all of the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, especially where schools are concerned, I have more parents than ever reaching out to me, asking me about home-schooling. One of the biggest questions they have is how will they be able to afford it?

These parents are facing the loss of income plus extra expenses investing in educational materials. Parents have so many difficult decisions right now on how to protect their families in a changing world. These additional scholarships will make a huge difference in the education of our young people.
