Letter: A legacy of shame

Republican office holders who do not speak out against the lies of Donald Trump and his allies that the election was stolen or rigged will go down in history books as cowardly and complicit in attempting to undermine democracy in this country.

Trump’s lawyers have been roundly defeated in the 22-plus cases they have filed. Why is that? Well, in court you need evidence. Since there is no evidence of widespread fraud, they have lost. But when you lose an election by close to 6 million votes and cannot win in court, you turn to cheating. Send in Lindsey Graham to try to influence a true hero, Brad Raffensperger, the Republican secretary of state of Georgia, to invalidate legal mail-in ballots. Or you try to pressure the two Republicans on the Wayne County Board of Canvassers to throw out legal and valid votes in that county, which also just happens to be a largely African American county.

In the end, Joe Biden will be sworn in, and he will get little if any help from Trump or his enablers in Congress. He will be left a mess to clean up. He will get no credit or help from the Republicans if he succeeds in righting the ship of state. A vast majority of Trump supporters will falsely believe the election was stolen. And all those who chose party over democracy by enabling Trump will leave a legacy of dishonor and shame.
