Letter: The 25% Trump tariff

President Trump’s new tariffs apply to all Canadian imports. Has anyone reported on unnoticed items? Many of the heating oil companies here in New Hampshire were bought out over the last three years by a Canadian consortium. That includes companies like Rhymes and Dead River.

Irving Oil is also a Canadian company that processes all of its products at a refinery in New Brunswick, including fuel for their gas stations here in New Hampshire. Irving also processes home heating oil and propane. The interconnected power grid we use also often pulls in hydropower from Canada.

I saw in a WMUR story that representatives in Coos County think the tariffs would be great because they would make businesses move back here, but they are not looking at what tariffs will affect. It’s 25% on everything. Maybe it’s time we put in that oil terminal and refinery in Newington as proposed in the 1970’s.
