Letter: Trust candidates who trust science

I trust science. I trust candidates who trust science. Doctors and scientists overwhelmingly agree that mask-wearing, hand-washing, and social distancing will help stem the course of this horrible pandemic.

Here in Weare the Democrats running to represent us – including Rachel Cisto, Gary Evans, Rob Girard, and Jen Paveglio for the House, and Jenn Alford-Teaster for the Senate – are introducing themselves via Zoom events sponsored by the Weare Democrats. I have known a couple of these candidates for many years. Their level-headed, safety-conscious approach to campaigning during this crisis supports my belief that they will take a thoughtful approach to legislation.

On the other hand, incumbents Gary Hopper, John Burt, Keith Erf, newcomer Leah Cushman, and incumbent Sen. Ruth Ward can be seen at recent political gatherings mask-less and in close contact with each other and their supporters. Ruth and Leah are nurses, so I would think they would know better. But then, many of us had hoped our president would know better. Apparently the freedom to infect others espoused by our president is a belief that runs down through the party all the way to the town level.

A candidate’s stance on mask-wearing and other scientifically proven coronavirus safety measures can tell you a lot about how they think and how they will proceed when it comes to protecting citizens. I trust candidates who believe in science and are more interested in solving problems that affect all of us than pleasing the head of the party.
