For the first time in 25 years, the UNH football team will open its season against arch rival Maine.

The Wildcats, who announced their schedule Tuesday, will kick off the year with a game against the visiting Black Bears at Wildcat Stadium on Sept. 2. It’ll be the first of five home games in 2017.

The Battle for the Brice-Cowell Musket has been scheduled as the regular-season finale in 16 of UNH Coach Sean McDonnell’s 18 years at the helm of the program. It’ll be the first time Maine and UNH play to open the season since 1992 and the first time in Durham since 1989.

UNH’s annual FBS game will be Sept. 9 at Georgia Southern University. In the only other meeting between the two games, the Wildcats won, 27-23, in 2004.

“Our schedule combines competitive non-conference games with the most challenging league in FCS football, the CAA,” McDonnell said. “Opening at home against Maine presents a very unique opportunity for our football program.”

The Wildcats will visit defending champion James Madison on Oct. 28.

Since the start of the 2007 season, UNH has a 51-8 home record.
