On June 6, 1944, nearly 160,000 troops embarked from Portsmouth, England, to arrive on the shores of Normandy as part of the largest modern military invasion.
Of those soldiers, 73,000 were from the United States, while 83,000 were from Britain and Canada. The first troops started landing overnight from the air. Then came the waves of 7,000 boats that arrived on the beaches of Omaha, Utah, Juno, Sword and Gold.
On Wednesday, the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a special ceremony was held at the New Hampshire Veterans Home, including historic excerpts; featured speaker Alfred Montoya Jr., director of the Manchester VA; and the reading of a D-Day poem by Joseph Renaldi.
