It’s time for action on Bradford town hall

Bradford’s town hall has served the community well for over 150 years. It is time to make it ready to serve for another 100 years.

“Patch job” repairs and short-term thinking over past decades have been at high cost and with limited results. Bond requests in recent years have ranged from full restoration to major work on the first floor while making the second floor auditorium “functional but not finished.”

A bond article is on the warrant for Bradford’s town meeting again this year. It is significantly different from previous proposals. This year the focus is on structural integrity, cost savings and providing safe, comfortable space for town offices and the public.

To achieve these objectives we must literally start from the ground up. Lifting the building, installing a full foundation and lowering the building back in place is task No. 1. A sprinkler system, new heating system, electrical upgrades, and exterior wall insulation and paint are the other major items.

The cost of this effort is $861,000, with more than $186,000 in hand in grants, contributions and gifts in kind. The bond request is for $675,000. Annual cost at a recently quoted rate is less than $45,000 per year.

The short-term repairs mentioned above and inefficient fuel use has cost the town about $30,000 per year on average in the past. That will be saved with the project as described.

It’s time for action. Please attend town meeting, Wednesday, March 15, at 7 p.m. at the elementary school and vote “yes” for Article 4.
