Letter: But what kind of jobs are they?

Friday, June 08, 2018

Several years ago, I sat on the Ways and Means Committee in the New Hampshire House. The recovery from the Great Recession was underway. We were hearing testimony from a noted economist on the large number of new jobs in New Hampshire. He was sure that the N.H. economy had almost fully recovered.

I asked him if these jobs paid anywhere close to the thousands of high-paying jobs with broad benefits that had been lost because of the recession. He quickly changed his tune and admitted the majority of the new jobs were entry level at minimum rates and benefits.

Today I ask the same question: Are the new jobs touted this week mainly entry-level jobs at minimum rates and benefits? And just another step in the economic destruction of the working class?
