The state wants to know your ideas for improving one of the hairiest intersections in Chichester, where Main and Depot streets meet Route 28.

A public information meeting will be held Monday, April 24, to discuss options for the intersection, which is on the state’s 10-year Highway Plan for upgrades. Construction is tentatively set to begin in 2026.

One proposal would involve shifting the Main Street intersection to directly opposite Depot Street while eliminating two other routes which cars can use to get onto Main Street from Route 28, also known as Suncook Valley Road. That proposal could also place stop lights at the intersection.

Currently, cars headed south on Route 28 can veer onto Main Street at an angle without having to slow down very much, which can make it difficult for people to get out of the parking lot of the Chichester Country Store, just past the intersection.

“This is just a proposal. The goal is to improve traffic flow,” said Richard Arcand, public information officer for the state Department of Transportation.

The meeting will be held on Monday, April 24, in the Grange Hall Meeting Room, 54 Main St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., presentation begins at 6 p.m. The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts.

Further south on Route 28, work is ongoing to repair the bridge carrying Route 28 over the river. This project will replace the bridge superstructure, and rehabilitate the bridge substructure.

One lane has been closed since March. Travel through the construction zone uses signalized, alternating one-lane traffic configuration. Traffic should be restored to two lanes in the fall of 2023.
