A climber who apparently slid down an icy gully on Mount Washington was killed Sunday, and officials are investigating.

On Sunday afternoon, U.S. Forest Service Snow Rangers from the Mount Washington Avalanche Center responded to a report of an overdue climber who had been going up “a moderately difficult snow and ice climb called Central Gulley,” on the Huntington Ravine.

The climber’s body was found at approximately 7:45 p.m., and released to authorities that night, according to a brief statement from the Forest Service which says “the incident is currently under investigation with law enforcement.” The climber was not identified.

“Icy surface conditions that developed in the mountains following several days of warm temperatures and rain increased the danger of long sliding falls the day of the accident,” the release said.
