Letter: Gun culture in America

Published: 03-19-2023 7:00 AM

One usually reliable source has the number of human beings killed by guns in 2022 at 20,138. Consider also that 647 of these were incidences of multiple deaths at schools, shopping centers, churches, homes, etc. And to our greater shame, the recent reports of toddlers killing themselves, their mother and/or siblings. I know we’re the land of the free and home of the brave, but that shouldn’t mean simply going out or just doing normal things.

Honest? We Americans tolerate a culture where the simple everyday act of being and living involve a risk factor known as guns. Oh, wow, am I going to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and have to worry that some person on a mission has a gun? I’m beginning to feel like an endangered species, or to paraphrase an old song, how many deaths will it take till we know that too many of us have died?
