Concord is the leafiest capital city in the Northeast, with almost half of its residential area covered by trees, according to an aerial survey company.

The ranking of state capitals was released Thursday by Nearmap. It said trees covered 49.2% of Concord’s residential area, making it the 8th leafiest capital city. The top 7 are all in the South.

The only other New England capital in the top half of rankings was Augusta, Maine, which had 46.3% tree cover.

Concord has a Tree Committee that works to support the planting and growth of trees in the city and programs such as the Sustainable Street Tree, which provides trees for planting each spring in locations suggested by residents.

Nearmap, an Australian firm, says it surveys more than 100 million locations in the United States up to three times per year, providing information it can sell to governments, insurers, construction companies, and others for such actions as wildfire management, city planning, and disaster recovery. It says its software can identify trees without leaves, even in summer and identify broken and damaged vegetation, such as dead wood lying on the ground or trees that have blown over.
