Letter: Cuts for wealthy shows arrogant indifference

Tuesday, December 26, 2017

“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they should do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

It would seem that our president and our elected Republican officials in Washington consider 9 million children a surplus population because they’re going home for their Christmas vacation without providing funding for the CHIP program.

As these same people stood in front of the White House congratulating themselves on passing the biggest tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, thousands of families around the country are in crisis because they don’t know how they’re going to save their children next year without health care.

We’re told there’s no money for this program, yet somehow, there’s millions of dollars available for tax cuts for the president’s family, the Koch brothers, the Mercer family and a handful of others who financially support the Republican Party. Where is the humanity? Where is the Christianity so often talked about?

I am filled with sadness at such arrogant indifference.
