A Concord man is facing multiple charges after state police say he caused damage in Vermont, and refused to stop for two New Hampshire police departments on Tuesday before also evading state police on Interstate 93 southbound in a pursuit that began in Thornton.
Christopher Hayward, 45, is being charged with aggravated driving under the influence, three felony counts of reckless conduct, reckless operation, and disobeying an officer. He was being held in Merrimack County Jail while awaiting arraignment in Franklin District Court, authorities said.
State police found the vehicle Hayward was allegedly driving around 7:01 p.m. following the reports from Vermont, running over at least one sign there. Hayward also didn’t stop for local police in Woodstock and Lincoln, authorities said.
As the vehicle headed south on I-93, state police used spike strips, and the two left-side tires were deflated, but Hayward continued driving, exiting the highway at Exit 20 in Tilton, according to police.
“Despite traveling on two rims, the driver continued west from Exit 20 into Franklin, before traveling south on Route 3 toward Boscawen,” police said in a press release.
The vehicle approached a second set of spikes deployed by police. Hayward turned into a pull-off near the Merrimack County Jail in Boscawen, and attempted to flee on foot, according to authorities.
That’s when Trooper Rees Davis released his K9 partner, Draco, and Hayward surrendered and was arrested, police said.
