Highlights:  The Bears were the top area team on their home course at the 21-team Black Bear Invitational in Northwood, featuring teams from all three NHIAA divisions, plus prep schools. Phillips Academy of Andover, Mass. (61), Phillips Exeter (63), Hanover (95), Champlain Valley, Vt. (103) and Coe-Brown (108) were the top five teams. 

Girls’ Cross Country

Highlights: Hopkinton finished eighth overall and was the D-III team at the 18-team Black Bear Invitational in Northwood, featuring teams from all three NHIAA divisions, plus prep schools. Oyster River (55), Hanover (66), Champlain Valley, Vt. (86), Phillips Exeter (96) and Phillips Andover (135) were the top five teams. Hopkinton had 249 points.

Football

Laconia 27, Gilford-Belmont 19

Key players: Gilford-Belmont – Noah Harder (161 rush yards on 18 carries, TD), Anakin Underhill (3-for-11, 80 pass yards, TD run), Hutch Haskins (59 rush yards on 9 carries, 35 yard reception), Logan Grant (49 rush yards on 4 carries, 30 yard reception), Ashton Taylor (85 yard kick return TD)

Highlights: After a scoreless opening quarter, Laconia led 14-13 at halftime. The score stayed that way until 2:30 was on the clock in the fourth quarter. The Sachems and Eagles traded touchdowns, but Gilford-Belmont’s final drive of the game fell just short of the end zone as time expired.

John Stark 62, Hollis-Brookline 6

Highlights: The Generals led 56-0 at halftime en route to a commanding victory.

St. Thomas 55, Pembroke 12

Key players: St. Thomas – Michael Skowron (3-for-5, 101 passing yards, TD pass, 50 rush yards, 2 rush TD), Trent Salyards (2 rush TD, 69 rush yards, 43 receiving yards)

Highlights: The Spartans recovered a fumble to keep it close in the first quarter, trailing just 7-6, but the Saints extended their lead to 33-6 at halftime. St. Thomas led 55-6 before Pembroke put more points on the board.

Pelham 54, Hillsboro-Deering/Hopkinton 0

Highlights: The Redhawks lost their third straight game on Friday night, this time to the defending champion Pythons.

Field Hockey

Concord 3, Winnacunnet 2, OT

Key players: Concord  – Lilly Merrill (2 goals), Nadia Hanna (goal)

Highlights: Merrill scored two goals in the fourth quarter, including one with two minutes left in regulation, to help the Crimson Tide overcome a 2-0 deficit. Hanna confidently scored on a penalty stroke in overtime to give Concord the win.

Lilly Merrill scoring both goals to bring the game into overtime and then Nadia Hanna stepping up to take the penalty stroke. So proud for them. Bishop Brady 2, Newfound 1

Highlights: Dolloff put Newfound on the board in the first quarter with 3:24 remaining. Brady got on the board in the third quarter with 3:53 remaining with a hit into the circle that Noel tipped to Fuller for the goal.With 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter Brady’s insert on a corner was met with Bryson sending a hit into the circle with Lazear connecting for the goal.

Golf

Girls’ individual state championship

Key players: Dover – Carys Fennessy (1st, 4-under 67); Winnacunnet – June Doerr (2nd, even par 71); Oyster River – Delaney Nadeau and Teagan Nadeau (tied 3rd, 3-over 74); Bishop Brady – Mady Savary (tied 5th, 8-over 79); Bishop Guertin – Maria Tribou (tied 5th, 8-over 79)

Highlights:  Bishop Brady’s Savary was the only area golfer to compete in the championship flight of the girls’ individual state championship that was held Saturday at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands in Salem. The top six finishers made the cut to compete in another round of 18 holes at Beaver Meadow on Oct. 14 to determine the state champion.

Boys’ Soccer

Winnisquam 3, Farmington-Nute 0

Highlights: The Bears led 1-0 at halftime and extended their lead in the second half to claim the homecoming victory.

Girls’ Soccer

Kearsarge 2, Fall Mountain 1

Key players: Kearsarge  – Adara Boucher (9 saves), Ann Dudley (goal, assist), Maddie Thorp (goal), Ava Shapiro (assist), Reese Lacombe (defense), Tessa Marinello (defense)

Highlights: The Wildcats opened the scoring one minute into the second half, but Thorp took a release pass from Dudley and put one in right under the crossbar in the 51st minute to tie the game 1-1. Teams went back and forth but the Cougars finally put in a second goal as Dudley connected on a cross from Shapiro in the 73rd minute.

Coach’s quote: “It has been a long nine days, playing six games and losing three starters to injuries. This team has faced a lot in a short time. A lot of adjustments and a lot of learning, but things finally clicked again. The girls could have easily packed it in after going down, but they kept fighting and earned this one today.” – Kearsarge’s Dave Smith

Girls’ Volleyball

Souhegan 3, Winnisquam 1

Key players: Winnisquam  –  Triniti Carter  (8 kills), Caiden Carter (4 kills, 11 digs, 6 aces), Lucy Prunier (18 assists, 9 digs, 6 aces), Loralie Nelson (9 digs ), Gianna Ball (5 digs)

Highlights: Winnisquam struggled with serve receive in sets one and two to trail 25-13, 25-18 early. In set three, the Bears were down 19-10 but battled back to win 25-21 behind the strong serving of Caiden Carter (points 11-18 with two aces) and Lucy Prunier (points 20-25 with three aces). The fourth set was tight, but the Sabers pulled away to close out the win, 25-17.
