Highlights: The Bears won their preliminary round match on their home field to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Coe-Brown will play at No. 2 Bow on Friday. Bow won 5-0 when the two teams met on Aug. 31.

Coach’s quote:  “Our defense captained by James McKane deserves a lot of credit because they didn’t give many opportunities to ConVal forwards. They are strong through the midfield and our guys worked hard to keep them from getting in a rhythm. The result was hard-earned but I think deserved. … Early in the year, Bow hammered us 5-0. No. 9 Laconia 1, No. 8 Pembroke 0

Highlights:  The Spartans worked hard to earn home field advantage for their playoff match, but the visiting Sachems topped Pembroke in a narrow victory. The Spartans improved significantly from last season when they went 3-12-1 and missed the tournament, and they won seven of their final eight matches to finish as the No. 8 seed.

D-III Boys’ Soccer

No. 4 Hopkinton 5, No. 13 Stevens 0

Key players: Hopkinton – Avery Condon (2 goals), Kristof Cauley (2 goals), Cam Bassett (goal), Liam Boyle (assist), Fin Murphy (assist), Nolan Linstad (assist), C0lby Boissy (save); Stevens – Nevin Marsh (11 saves)

Highlights:  Condon scored two “workman-like” goals, according to Zipke, in the 26th and 30th minutes to give the Hawks a 2-0 halftime lead. Bassett finished confidently from 12 yards out in the 43rd minute and Cauley scored a pair on low, hard shots in the 53rd and 57th minutes. Hopkinton hosts No. 5 St. Thomas (14-3) in Friday’s Division III quarterfinal.

Coach’s quote:  “From the jump today the Hawks took it to the Stevens team and ran away with the victory. … Vince Louca contributed some hard-earned minutes at the striker position, creating chances and almost scoring a few times. D-III Field Hockey

No. 5 Newfound 1, No. 4 Bishop Brady 0

Key players: Bishop Brady – Ava Archambault (2 saves); Newfound – Jayden Gilpatrick (goal)

Highlights:  The Giants had the majority of the shots, corners and chances on net, but Gilpatrick scored with 1:37 left in the first quarter to eliminate Brady in the quarterfinals on their home field. The Giants outshot Newfound, 21-2, (11 of those Brady shots were on net) and had a 10-3 advantage in corners. 

Coach’s quote:  “The girls played hard. Unfortunately, Jayden Gilpatrick was able to push one through the Brady defense. Newfound transitions out of the defensive zone well. Highlights: The Generals won the fourth set, but fell in the Division II prelims to the Eagles.

Highlights:  The Knights defeated the visiting Bears, 25-22, 25-20, 25-14, to end Winnisquam’s season in the preliminary round.

Football

Milford 49, H-D/Hopkinton 27

Key players: HDH – Robert King (2 rush TD, 36 rush yards, 87 yards on 5 catches; interception), Roman Finlayson (TD run, 76 yards on 7 carries), Mason Nichols (65 yards on 14 carries, 1-for-1 passing, 27 pass yards), Noah Carter (5-for-10 passing, 65 pass yards), Thaddeus Maughan (11 tackles)

Highlights: The Redhawks kept it close in the first half, trailing Milford just 21-13 at halftime, but the Spartans picked it up in the second half to hand HDH a loss in its final game on its home field.
