On Robert Azzi’s heart

In a November 12 My Turn to the Concord Monitor, Robert Azzi decries Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s censure in Congress, suggesting the slogan “from the river to the sea” is an aspirational call for freedom. Two months ago it was commonly understood as a call for the elimination of Israel, with murderous consequences for Jews. Azzi shuts down Tlaib’s critics by labeling them “Orientalists” for claiming to know the hearts of Palestinians. Perhaps Azzi can explain, then, what was in the heart of Haj Amin al-Husseini, when he sought Hitler’s assistance in ridding Jerusalem of its Jews in the 1940s, or what Abu Mazen means when he claims Nazis and Jews conspired to “exaggerate” the Holocaust.

Perhaps he can explain why the Hamas charter says “the rocks and trees will cry out: ‘O Moslem, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him.” Or why, on Kristallnacht 85th anniversary, pro-Palestinian students at U.S. universities chanted, “from the river to the sea” in one breath, and “there is only one solution” in the next. Was Hitler’s “final solution” in their hearts? Merriam-Webster defines gaslighting as “psychological manipulation of a person… that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories… and typically leads to confusion… and a dependency on the perpetrator.” I can think of no better word to fit the circumstance. It is a cruel trick indeed to advocate for genocide, then disparage the intended targets for condemning it.
