Schools throughout SAU 24 recognized Constitution Day on Sept. 18 (Sept. 17 is the actual date of Constitution Day) in various ways depending on grade level.
The activities ranged from social studies teachers at John Stark dressing up as their favorite part of the Constitution and weaving the Constitution into their daily lessons to preschoolers writing a preschool Constitution about being a good friend and using their handprint as a signature. Middle school activities to celebrate the Constitution included translating the Preamble into student-friendly language, making a brochure about the three branches of government, and a Constitution Day Escape Room that took students on a secret mission around the classroom while decoding facts about the Constitution and our Founding Fathers.
Constitution Day was created in 2004 by George W. Bush to celebrate the Sep.7, 1787, signing of the US Constitution. The goal of the day is to engage students to help them understand the importance of citizen action and participation in government.
