D-II Girls’ Tennis

No. 9 Bow 7, No. 8 Kingswood 2

Key players: Bow – Katie McCabe (8-6 win at No. 1), Maddy Desrosiers (8-4 win at No. 2), Makaylie Laws (8-3 win at No. 3), Lilly Gula (8-5 win at No. 4), Grace DeCosta (3-0 retired at No. 5), Desrosiers and Laws (8-4 win at No. 2 doubles), DeCosta and Alexis Pelletier (8-6 win at No. 3 doubles)

Highlights: The visiting Falcons beat the host Knights in the first round of the Division II tournament. Bow won five of six singles matches to lock up the win early and picked up two more victories in doubles. McCabe had Bow’s fifth and deciding win, 8-6, in No. 1 singles. The Falcons travel to top-ranked and unbeaten Souhegan in Friday’s quarterfinal.

Highlights: The Spartans made the program’s first ever tournament appearance and picked up a couple of wins, but ultimately fell on the road to the Tomahawks.

Highlights: The Bears fell on the road against the Owls in the first round of the Division II playoffs. After starting the season 0-5, Coe-Brown went 6-3 the rest of the way to secure the final spot in the postseason.

Highlights: Bryson had another great game in the circle, giving up just two hits in six innings, and Tyrell hit for the cycle in this game as the Giants defeated the Pioneers in the first game of a doubleheader.

Highlights: Brady scored a run in each of the first two innings before Trinity battled back to tie the game, 2-2, in the fifth. The Giants took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating two runs to lock up game two of the doubleheader on Wednesday.

Highlights: The Hawks fell behind early, but played the Saints even the rest of the way. Hopkinton will be around the No. 9 seed for the Division III tournament.

Annie Morrall played great at third stopping several ground balls and even turned an infield double play with runners on first and second. Despite the loss, we played well today. Highlights: Shaughnessy, a freshman, pitched the final inning to complete the shutout on Wednesday to close out a game that was suspended after four innings due to thunder on May 16. This was the first of three games the Cougars completed on Wednesday.

Highlights: Concord scored six runs in the top of the second inning on RBI singles by Washburn and Turant, and a bases-clearing triple by Simms. Simms scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.

Highlights: The Pride scored first, scratching out a run in the third inning of a pitcher’s duel, and held John Stark hitless until the fifth inning when Dykstra’s RBI single to center scored Pond. Both teams squandered scoring opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Generals broke out in the eighth inning when Chase Philibotte walked with the bases loaded for the game-winning run and Harris connecting on a booming ground-rule double to drive in three more. Williams held MV scoreless in the bottom of the eighth. John Stark will be a top-three seed for the Division II postseason tournament beginning next week (depending on how Souhegan and Bow fare over their final games), while MV’s season comes to an early end.

Coach’s quote: “We have been winning kind of ugly lately. Our pitching has really carried us of late and we have had just enough runs to win. Can’t say enough how our pitchers after Chase have really stepped up after not having a ton of varsity experience coming into the season. Pretty special though to go 15-2 and I am proud of the boys. Highlights: Stewart pitched a complete game to lead the Spartans to a victory in their final game of the regular season. Pembroke could finish anywhere between the No. 8-11 seeds for the Division II tournament which begins next week.

Belmont 10, White Mountains 3

Key players: Belmont – Wyatt Divers (7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K; 1-for-3, double, walk, 2 runs), Owen Waldron (1-for-4, RBI, run), Anakin Underhill (2-for-4, HR, double, 5 RBI, 2 runs), Jaxson Embree (1-for-2, 2 HBP, run), Wyatt Bamford (RBI), Brady Thurber (1-for-3, double, 2 RBI, run), Brayden Townsend (1-for-2, walk, 2 runs)

Highlights: White Mountains smacked a two-run homer in the fourth, but Belmont followed with one run in the bottom half and seven more in the fifth. Underhill cleared the bases with a three-run double in that frame and a hit a towering two-run home run in the sixth. Belmont will have the No. 1 seed in the Division III postseason tournament.

Highlights: Brady jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first on a two-run single by Bedard and an RBI single by Thornton. Thornton started on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings, but had to be removed in the top of the third with tightness in his elbow. Gaudreault pitched the final five innings and only gave up two earned runs to preserve the victory. Bedard also hit a bases-clearing double with the bases loaded in the sixth to open up an 8-3 lead.

Highlights: Hopkinton prevailed in a defensive battle against a fast Laconia team, leading 5-1 at halftime. Laconia got back into the game with a pair of goals in the third quarter, but the Hawks locked down defensively and were opportunistic offensively in the fourth to lock up the win.
